About the Ossa Music Prize:

Established in 2018 and named after Tasmania’s highest mountain peak, the Ossa Music Prize is generously provided by an anonymous alumnus of the University of Tasmania. The Prize supports a Graduate or an Undergraduate student (and/or an ensemble) in pursuing excellence in musicianship and performance, and underwrites a state-wide performance tour, with a special focus on the North and North West and East Coast regions.

About KARAI :

Christian/Karaitiana “KARAI” Hemara is a Singer-Songwriter Guitarist who is based in Hobart Tasmania. Born in Melbourne, Victoria and surrounded by the influence of his musician Father and Grandparents’ taste in music spanning from Folk to Soul and everything in between, their eclectic taste in music drew KARAI to singing at an early age. Self-taught, his love for music expanded as he grew older and eventually, he decided to pursue music seriously. Beginning his professional career in 2007 at the age of 18, KARAI has carefully crafted his vocal range, agility and high energy stage theatrics throughout his career leading him to tour Australia with the likes of Prinnie and Mahalia, Chet Faker, Ngaiire, Sampa the Great, Okenyo, New Venusians and Sex on Toast whilst supporting Al Di Meola (as a soloist), Hiatus Kaiyote & Thundercat (with Sampa the Great), Jones Jnr. (with New Venusians), Leon Bridges & The Black Seeds (with Ngaiire) and Jinja Safari (with Okenyo).
